The Process of Replacing an Oil Boiler with a Heat Pump
Many rural properties across the UK rely on oil-fired heating because they are not connected to the mains gas network. Air source heat pumps are becoming an increasingly popular alternative. Replacing an oil boiler involves more than simply swapping one appliance for another, so careful planning is essential to ensure the new system performs efficiently.
Assessing the Property
The first step is a detailed assessment of the home. We will calculate the property’s heat loss, taking into account factors such as insulation, floor area, windows and construction. This determines the size of heat pump required. Existing radiators and pipework are also checked, as heat pumps generally operate at lower flow temperatures than oil boilers. Some radiators may need to be upgraded to provide sufficient heat output.
Installing the Heat Pump System
Once the system has been designed, the oil boiler is removed and the air source heat pump is installed outside the property in a location with adequate airflow. One advantage of replacing an oil boiler is that many oil-heated homes already have a hot water cylinder, which is also required for most air source heat pump systems. In some cases, the existing cylinder may be suitable for continued use, while in others it may be replaced with a model designed specifically for heat pump operation.
Pipework, heating controls and electrical connections are then completed before the system is thoroughly tested and commissioned to ensure it operates safely and efficiently.
Setting Up for Long-Term Performance
After installation, the heating controls are adjusted to suit the property and the homeowner is shown how to operate the system. Heat pumps work most efficiently when maintaining a steady indoor temperature rather than being switched on and off frequently. Professional installation and correct system design help ensure reliable heating, lower energy use and consistent comfort throughout the year.
