When considering a heat pump for home heating and cooling, one common concern is noise. However, modern domestic heat pumps are designed to operate quietly and efficiently, making them suitable for residential areas without causing annoyance. Components

Heat pumps have two main components that may produce sound: the outdoor unit (containing the compressor and fan) and the indoor unit (such as a fan coil or radiator system). In most modern systems, the outdoor unit produces the most noticeable sound, but even then, the levels are typically comparable to or quieter than a standard refrigerator or light rain. It’s often only around 40–60 decibels (dB(A)) at a distance of one metre.

To put this into context, 40 dB(A) is roughly the noise level of a quiet library, while 60 dB(A) is similar to a normal conversation. Manufacturers are continually improving acoustic insulation, fan blade design, and compressor technology to further reduce operational noise.
